Making summaries

Follow these steps 

  1. Make a 10 word summary
  2. List key vocabulary (words you think are important to learn)
  3. List key themes
  4. Make a sentence for each key theme
  5. Make the summary

Example with Chemical Secret 
1. Short 10 word summary
John gets hired by a crooked paint factory manager.
2. Key vocabulary
Paint factory, biologist, job, wife, safe, government, nervous
3. Key themes
(Un)employment, loss, age discrimination, occupational health and safety.
4. Sentence with key themes
John Duncan is unemployed and desperately needs a job.
He suffered the loss of his wife, and is deeply affected by it.
He is concerned that he may not get hired due to his age.
His job would be to monitor the safety of the workplace and the community.

Then put them all into a paragraph, and fix it so it is easier to read. Add key vocabulary at the bottom.

Example summary for chapter 1
John Duncan gets hired by a crooked paint factory manager. John is an unemployed biologist, and desperately needs a job. He suffered the loss of his wife nine years before, and is deeply affected by it. He is concerned that he may not get hired due to his age. His job would be to monitor the safety of the workplace and the community.
Keywords: Paint factory, biologist, job, wife, safe, government, nervous
